How to Summarize Pitches

VCs can meet hundreds of companies each year, and it's essential to keep detailed notes to remember key details of each pitch. It's easy to forget key details and embarrassing to ask the same questions multiple times. Maybe more importantly, structured notes are essential to communicating with other partners at the firm. Notes that are logged in a CRM tool can be shared with other partners and can be used to avoid duplication of effort.

But what should you include in your meeting notes? We have compiled a list of key points to include in your meeting notes.

  • Meeting identification: Who were the participants in the meeting, including the company name and representatives present?
  • Business model understanding: What is the core business model of the company being pitched?
  • Problem statement clarity: What specific problem or need is the company addressing with its product or service?
  • Solution description: How does the company's solution work to solve the identified problem or meet a specific need?
  • Market opportunity assessment: What information was provided about the target market size and growth potential for this solution?
  • Competitive landscape insight: Who are the main competitors, and what differentiates this company's offering from theirs?
  • Revenue model details: How does the company plan to generate revenue, including any pricing strategies discussed?
  • Traction evidence: What traction has been demonstrated so far, such as user growth metrics, partnerships, or sales figures shared during the call?
  • Team background analysis: What qualifications or experience do key team members bring that supports their ability to execute on their business plan effectively?
  • Funding specifics: How much funding is being sought in this round, and how does it align with projected milestones or uses of capital mentioned in the pitch call?
